Recently, I've noticed that italics on my documents are not printing (or rather, they're just printing in regular style font). After reporting this to Google (and receiving no response, of course), and then doing some Internet searching on this problem, it turns out that Google no longer supports the font I was using. The font I was using was "Times New Roman," which is a widely supported font, so I was surprised to hear this. The solution was to install Google's "Times" font instead, which looks pretty much the same. I did this, and now I can print in italics. Apparently, Google has stopped supporting Times New Roman, Arial, and I believe Verdana also. They have their own alternatives: Times, Arimo, and Varela, respectively. Weird.

If you want to extract their first and last names, that's a little trickier. There may be a simpler way to do this, but this works: To get the last name, you can use the formula:
To get the first name, you can use the formula:
In both of the above, replace "A2" with whatever cell contains the student's name NOTE: For some reason, Google Sheets does not accept the second formula above when it is cut and pasted (I'm not sure why). You will have to type it in manually for it to work. |
